Each year, we recognize exceptional achievements within the mining industry by inviting our readers to nominate individuals, companies, or organizations that have shown remarkable dedication to advancing the industry over the past year.

Nominations for the 2025 Mining Magazine Awards have now closed. The winners will be announced on MiningMagazine.com and featured in the November 2025 issue of Mining Magazine.

Technology & Innovation Award

This award highlights mining companies or individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry through technological advancements. It recognises the development or implementation of innovative mining methods, equipment, or software that enhance efficiency, safety, or productivity.

Safety Excellence Award

This award honours mining companies that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to protecting their workforce and fostering a culture of safety. It rewards companies that can demonstrate they have developed comprehensive safety protocols, develop innovative training programs, and continuously improve operational practices to ensure the well-being of their employees.

Tailings Innovation Award

This award honours those mining companies, equipment and technology companies that have achieved groundbreaking advancements in tailings management. By demonstrating exceptional innovation, this organisation has significantly improved environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, and community well-being. Their pioneering approach to tailings management will exemplify sustainable practices, setting a new benchmark for responsible resource extraction.

Software Excellence Award

This award is to recognise those providers that have demonstrated outstanding excellence in creating solutions that have transformed the mining industry.

Net Zero Achievement Award

This is a new award that celebrates those in the mining industry that have achieved tangible results in the journey towards net-zero. This might be a mining company that has undertaken a bold electrification strategy, an equipment manufacturer that has developed a game-changing innovation to help miners cut emissions, or an individual that has driven sustainability in their organisation.

Fleet Excellence Award

This is an award for those equipment manufacturers, technology providers that have designed and manufactured mining fleet vehicles, fleet management tools or equipment with exceptional performance, safety features, and environmental sustainability features.

Mineral Processing Award

Mining Magazine's Mineral Processing Award recognises outstanding advancements in mineral processing technologies that drive the mining industry forward. This prestigious award honours those who elevate the efficiency, sustainability, and value creation in mineral extraction and refinement.

Drill & Blast Award

Mining Magazine's Drill and Blast Award recognizes groundbreaking advancements in drilling and blasting technologies. This prestigious award honours those who push the boundaries of efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility in mineral extraction.

Bulk Handling Award

Mining Magazine's Bulk Handling Award recognises exceptional achievements in the efficient and sustainable handling of bulk materials across the mining industry. This award honours those who excel in optimising material flow, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing safety standards.

Exploration Excellence Award

The Mining Magazine Exploration Excellence Award recognises those in the exploration field that have demonstrated exceptional innovation and dedication in mineral exploration, honouring those groundbreaking discoveries that are shaping the future of mineral exploration and resource development.

Partnership of the Year Award

Mining is increasingly being defined by new ways of working together, and this award is designed to celebrate those partnerships that have made a difference. The Mining Magazine Partnership of the Year Award recognises those pairings that lead the way in shaping the future of the sector.

Woman of the Year Award

Mining Magazine supports women in mining, and this award celebrates those women in the sector that have shown exceptional leadership skills, inspired others in the industry and driven change and progress. Nominees can be from any region or area of expertise within mining but must stand out as someone who makes a difference to colleagues and to mining as a whole.

Personality of the Year Award

This award is open to any individual in mining who has made a huge impact. The characters who are influencing the industry and changing it for the better, the voices who are shaping the narrative, and the leaders and colleagues that make a difference.

Judges

Paul Freeman-2

Paul Freeman

Paul began his career in the UK coal mining industry, specializing in roadway drivage and longwall operations. After earning a Diploma in Mining and a Mine Manager’s Certificate, he advanced to Mine Undermanager before relocating to South Africa, where he served as a mine captain in room and pillar operations. Returning to the UK, he completed an MSc and PhD in Rock Mechanics. His extensive career included roles with Dowty Mining, Meco, Longwall, Joy, and Komatsu, spanning Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, Russia, and China. Notably, he led the installation of the first Western longwall in Poland post-1989 and managed China’s inaugural full Western longwall project in 1999, with Joy Longwall achieving a world record of 8mt in 2000. After serving as Komatsu’s global sales director and general manager in China, he became President of Abmec in 2021, now focusing on UK mining seminars and conferences.

Prof Ismet Canbulat

Prof Ismet Canbulat

Professor Ismet Canbulat is an internationally recognised leader in mining engineering, with over 30 years of experience spanning technical roles in academia, industry, consultancy, and applied research. He is head of the Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering School at UNSW in Australia. Prior to joining UNSW, Professor Canbulat held senior technical and leadership roles internationally, including as Group Geotechnical Engineer at Anglo American in Brisbane, where he was responsible for developing global geotechnical standards and supporting major capital projects. He previously served as a Principal Engineer in various consulting companies and as a Research Area Manager at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa.

Stacy Hope

Stacy Hope

Stacy brings over 14 years of expertise as an international development specialist and strategic advisor, focusing on gender, natural resources, renewable energy, social impact investment, disaster risk, climate resilience, and large-scale infrastructure projects across commercial, public, and multilateral sectors. Currently a full-time partner at Environmental Resources Management (ERM), she also consults for UN agencies and serves on advisory boards for UTU Social Impact Investment Fund, a DRC-focused impact fund, Jamii, and Actions for the Development of Africa, where she integrates gender-transformative community development with mining investments, aligned to UN SDGs and ESG standards. Additionally, she advises a Turkish geothermal energy project and previously held roles as ESG Director at Africa Matters Limited and Managing Director of Women in Mining UK.

Kate Thornton

 

Thornton is chief executive of ABMEC, the trade association for the British mining supply chain.
Kate studied Biomedical Material Science for her undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester. She then went on to complete her PhD at the same university. On completion of her degrees, she moved into the Chemical sector where she worked in a variety of roles before moving to ABMEC. Kate has been heavily involved in IOM3 for a number of years. She first became involved with IOM3 as a student in the Younger Members’ Committee (now the Student & Early Career Group) in 2008 and held a number of roles before becoming their youngest ever President in January 2023. She relinquished this role in January 2025 and is now their Chair of Trustees. Kate also has a role as Strategic Advisor for the Henry Royce Institute, a position she has held since February 2024.

Morrison is Chief Technical Officer at ATC Williams (Melbourne), bringing nearly 30 years of experience in sustainable mining practices and ESG leadership. Previously serving as global function lead for tailings, dams and heap leach at Newmont Corporation (2019-2024), she spearheaded enterprise-wide implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. Kim founded the GeoStable Tailings Consortium and authored over 50 technical publications, including serving as managing editor for the Tailings Management Handbook. Her distinguished recognition includes SME Fellow (2024) and AIME's Environmental Stewardship Distinguished Service Award (2022).
